Objectifs

Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:

● Understand the Power BI ecosystem (Desktop, Service) and its core functionalities.
● Connect to various data sources and transform them for analysis.
● Master the creation of dynamic and interactive dashboards for effective data presentation.
● Apply data modeling best practices to ensure report performance and reliability.
● Use advanced techniques like conditional formatting to enhance the readability of visuals.
● Get introduced to the basic concepts of the DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) language to create custom calculations.
● Implement Row-Level Security (RLS) for secure and targeted data sharing by directorate.
● Publish and share reports securely and selectively within the organization.

Prérequis

● Basic to intermediate knowledge of Excel features is a plus, including:

○ Simple formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, IF).
○ PivotTables.
○ Managing data in tables.
● No prior experience with Power BI is required. The training will cover the concepts from the ground up.

Day 1: Power BI Fundamentals and Data Preparation

Module 1: Introduction to the Power BI Ecosystem

● General overview of the platform: Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and Power BI Mobile.
● Understanding the workflow: Get Data -> Transform -> Model -> Visualize -> Share.
● Navigating the Power BI Desktop interface.
Module 2: Connecting and Transforming Data with Power Query
● Connecting to common data sources (Excel, CSV, etc.).
● Using the Power Query Editor to clean and prepare data (filtering, removing errors, replacing values).
● Transforming data to meet analysis needs (pivoting, unpivoting, adding custom columns).
● Hands-on lab: Transforming directorate names (extracting the first letter, etc.).
Module 3: The Basics of Data Modeling
● Introduction to relationships between tables.
● Understanding the star schema concept (fact tables and dimension tables).
● Best practices for creating a simple and efficient data model.

Day 2: Visualization, Analysis, and Introduction to DAX

Module 4: Creating Interactive Reports

● Exploring the different types of visuals (charts, tables, maps, gauges).
● Creating and configuring visuals to represent data.
● Using filters and slicers to make reports dynamic.
● Organizing the layout of a report.
Module 5: Advanced Formatting and Visualization Best Practices
● Focus on conditional formatting: Highlighting data based on business rules (colors, icons, data bars).
● Hands-on lab: Applying conditional formatting based on directorates or performance thresholds.
● Creating hierarchies and using the drill-down feature.
Module 6: Introduction to the DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) Language
● Understanding the difference between a calculated column and a measure.
● Creating simple measures with basic functions (SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, DISTINCTCOUNT).
● Overview of common DAX functions to understand their utility without getting into excessive complexity.
● Hands-on lab: Creating a few key measures for the dashboard.

Day 3 : Sharing, Security, and Best Practices

Module 7: The Power BI Service and Sharing

● Publishing a report from Power BI Desktop to the Power BI Service.
● The difference between a report and a dashboard in the service.
● Exploring sharing and collaboration options (workspaces, sharing reports).
Module 8: Data Modeling and Security (Deep Dive)
● Implementing Row-Level Security (RLS)
○ Understanding the concept and its importance.
○ Creating security roles in Power BI Desktop.
○ Testing the roles to ensure each directorate can only see its own data.
○ Managing security in the Power BI Service.
● Best practices for secure and selective sharing.
Module 9: Synergy with Excel and Wrap-up
● Helpful Excel skills for Power BI: How Power Query and the data model (Power Pivot) in Excel are precursors to Power BI.
● How to make Excel and Power BI interact (Analyze in Excel).
● Summary of the 3 days, review of key topics, and an open Q&A session to address specific cases relevant to the learner.
